welcome

I am Rebecca. I'm fascinated by points of change: The moment a character can no longer continue as they were. The moment a relationship fractures. The arrival of an outsider. A community being forced to confront something it would rather ignore. These are the spaces where I find stories.

My work moves between fiction and documentary, but my instinct is the same in both: I want to get close enough to people to find the truth underneath what they say. I'm particularly drawn to complicated women, outsiders and characters whose internal worlds collide with the expectations placed upon them.

Place is equally important to me. I grew up surrounded by the Atlantic on the island of Jersey, and landscapes recur throughout my work — islands, coastlines, oceans and communities existing slightly apart from everywhere else.

Landscape shapes character. Places hold memories: It can offer freedom and become a prison. I am fascinated by the polarities of life and what we as humans are capable of - both ‘good’ and ‘bad’. I am always drawn back towards the ocean.

Visually, I'm drawn to intimacy against scale: the tiny human figure against an enormous landscape; the smallest expression on someone's face; natural light; movement; water; texture; imperfection.

I want the camera to feel emotionally present rather than simply observational. Ultimately, I'm interested in transformation.

Who were we before this happened? Who are we afterwards?

And what happens in between.

Where do we go from here?

That's the space in which I want to make films.

"exploring complicated people. Strong sense of place. Humanity, darkness — and humour".
